I think you will find the military resources of Europe is larger and better equipped than anything Russia could throw in those days. The Russian army has suffered a chronic lack of investment since the fall of communism.

And since, as you rightly pointed out, Russia could simply remove the plug from the supply of gas, I wonder why they just attack the UK anyway? The United Kingdom already buys gas from Russia. Shortage of gas would quickly get the UK to do what Russia wants .. if the UK does not have its own source, although it is currently too low to meet the needs of all countries.
