Becoming A Guidance Counselor

Hello I recently graduated from college with a degree in secondary education, history and political science. I IR certification for secondary teaching of history and political science 9-12. I also have a conditional initial license to teach history at New York 7-12. Currently, I work as an academic advisor in downtown school. I want my masters soon. I also wanted to become a guidance counselor. Does anyone know what programs are available to become a guidance counselor and the process?

Hello! You'll need to take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) and apply to graduate studies at the university of your choice. Follow instructions to the letter. You will need to provide three letters of recommendation, preferably from faculty who know you well. Your letter of intent is also very important. The degree you will be working on a Masters in "consultation" in the College of Education. There are courses that are required, and choice. The college I attended has three components: primary, secondary, and the Community and the Agency. Usually, it was taken a few choices that have determined this way we were in. Also, make sure the program is CACREP approved or certified. This is very important.

Near graduation, you will take the National Council reviews and this will give the NCC (National Certified Counsellor) status - very important! Then you apply to your State Council and ask for a state license to practice.

PS I suggest you talk to counselors at the school where you work to see what they know of programs, and can recommend. This will save you time, and they are a great source of your letters of recommendation, and other assistance during the journey.
