Hip Replacement Implant Options

Hip replacements are among the most common procedures in orthopedics. When a hip replacement is performed, the arthritic hip joint damage is removed. The hip joint ball and socket is then replaced by an artificial implant. The materials used in the implant depends on several factors, including patient age, level of activity of the patient and the surgeon's preference.

Total hip replacement is a successful orthopedic joint, allowing hundreds of thousands of people to live fuller, more active lives ....

Implant Construction

Many people credit Sir John Charnley, a British orthopaedist, with the first show of total replacement of hip modern. His innovations included combining a metal stem and ball with a plastic shell and using a methacrylate cement to hold the devices in place.

Today, the stem portions of most hip implants are titanium or cobalt chromium alloys. They come in different forms and some porous surfaces to allow bone growth ...

All materials used in total hip replacement have four common characteristics:

  • They are biocompatible. They can function in the body without creating a local account or a systematic rejection response.
  • They are resistant to corrosion, degradation and wear. Therefore, they retain their strength and shape for a long period. Wear resistance is particularly important to maintain good joint function and prevent further destruction of bone caused by debris particles generated by the implant parts move against each other ....

Implant insertion

During surgery to total hip replacement, the orthopedic surgeon will have a number of measures to ensure proper prosthesis selection, limb length, and rotation of the hip. After the incision, the surgeon works between the large hip muscles to access the joint.

The femur is pushed out of the socket, exposing the joint cavity. The head of the femur is removed deteriorated. The acetabulum is prepared by cleaning and expand with circular reamers of gradually increasing size. The new acetabular shell is implanted securely within the prepared hemispherical socket. The inner plastic implant is placed in the metal shell and fixed in place.

Cemented total hip

Over the past 40 years, there have been many improvements in materials and methods used to maintain the femoral and acetabular components in place. Today, the most commonly used bone cement is an acrylic polymer called polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA).

A patient with a cemented total hip replacement can put weight on his leg and walk without support almost immediately after surgery, resulting in rapid recovery. Although cemented implants have a long and distinguished success, they are not ideal for everyone ....

Total hip arthroplasty without cement

In the 1980s, new implant designs have been introduced to attach directly to bone without the use of cement. In general, these models are larger and longer than those used with cement.

They also have a surface topography which is conducive to attracting new bone growth. Most are textured or have a surface coating around a large part of the implant so that the new bone actually grows into the surface of the implant ...

Hybrid total hip

A total hip replacement has a hybrid Compon.
