Posted on February 17, 2010.
Independent Living CommunitiesRetirement communities (aka communities of independent living) to obtain a special license? What's this?

I do not talk to assisted living facilities. I think it is state by state, but I'm not sure what would be called and who delivers.

independent living communities, also known as senior housing and senior communities are limited to seniors housing, generally 55 and older or 62 and older. Services do not include support services or personnel to meet the special needs of aging residents. Instead, senior residences are designed for independent people in good general health who are capable of living on their own desire, but the lifestyle associated with living in community.

facilities nursing homes often respond to those seeking a lifestyle enriched with organizing social activities. Many offer courses such as dance, art, ceramics, woodworking and more. Others are equipped exercise and fitness room, pool and spa, laundry services, meals and / or dining room, and have access to local transport.

A recent study by AARP found that more than 40% of seniors moving to apartment complexes prefer communities age restricted to residences integrated age. The Department of Housing and Urban Development regulations allow the exclusion of age, however, exceptions may be made for those who are under the minimum age if disabled. The residences that meet the technical definition of elderly housing can legally exclude families with children.

nursing homes are not allowed by government agencies and are absent from formal regulation. The agreements and conditions are determined by the managing body of the community. Residents who qualify for senior communities are often eligible for federal grants. In such cases, it would be prudent to determine if facilities accept rent checks.

Some factors to consider when searching for senior living communities:
- Safety features complex and each unit of security
- The availability of storage
- Proximity to doctors and medical
- Convenience of parking
- One level over several levels
- Stair lifts versus
- Bathroom safety, including grab bars
- Facilities Site
