Other Depression Treatments Almost everybody gets a little "depressed" at times of their lives, and a brief attack of the blues is not necessarily something to fear. But if the symptoms of depression persist then it could be clinical depression, either severe or mild depression. Any persistent depressive symptoms need prompt medical examinations by a health professional.
Depression Depression is one of the most common psychiatric disorders. Symptoms of depression are often subtle and unrecognized both by patients and physicians. The brain contains a network of interconnected nerve cells called neurons. The junction between neurons is called the synapse. The transmission of impulses from one neuron to another is facilitated by chemicals called neurotransmitters.
Treatment of atypical depression
A study by McGrath et al published in the American Journal of Psychiatry in 2000 found that Prozac was no better than tricyclic antidepressant imipramine in the treatment of atypical depression, although side effects were less. A study by Quitkin et al published in 1993 in the British Journal of Psychiatry has revealed a response rate of 72 percent for patients with atypical depression on the MAOI Nardil compared to 44 percent on imipramine. The American Psychiatric Association 2000 Practice Guidelines for the treatment of patients with major depressive states: "MAOIs may be particularly effective in treating subgroups of patients ... with atypical features. "

"Short term" centered psychotherapy and therapeutic programs that stress changes in interpersonal relations and cognitive self-awareness are becoming more popular, partly because long-term analytical approaches to personality changes are economically unfeasible.
Patients who receive psychotherapy in any of several types - including cognitive, interpersonal therapy oriented, or behavior of social skills training - tend to have a good prognosis, with or without antidepressant medication. Analytical and other therapies based on introspection seems useful for some patients, provided that specific models neurotic conflict can be solved, the patient meets the criteria of that other form of treatment, and clinicians experienced in its use .
Treatment of psychotic depression
electroconvulsive therapy is only done within hospitals, causing most patients to remain hospitalized while it lasts. It is effective for depressed patients who are either mistaken or marked psychomotor retardation. For patients, it consists of general anesthesia twice a week for two or three weeks and they experience mild confusion for an hour or two after each session.
