Iron For Pregnant Women

Iron For Pregnant WomenWhat are the side effects of taking iron tablets by pregnant women and what are the reasons why the side effects?

My wife is pregnant and is in its third quarter (7 months). When she started taking iron tablets, she begins to feel uncomfortable after eating them for a week. Sometimes, she feels pain in the stomach. Sometimes she will frequent calls nature. But one doctor says that the iron is very important and it should not prevent them from taking, despite the side effects. Another doctor said she should stop taking iron tablets and injections carry iron if needed. We are surprised that how can we bear iron injections when they can not be comfortable with iron tablets? We are in dilemma about following the advice of one of these two doctors.

If the doctor insists that she is taking iron supplements, I would try buying it in liquid form, that way she can control the amount of iron it is. Pregnant women in need, even just taking a teaspoon full of orange juice is better than not at all.

Are there any side effects take a lot of iron?
High levels of iron in supplements can upset your digestive tract. Most often, they lead to constipation, which is already a problem for many pregnant women. But you may also have nausea or diarrhea, more rarely. If you think this is the case for you, talk to your doctor about this. If you are not anemic, it may be advisable for you to go to a prenatal vitamin with a lower dose of iron. If you have anemia, you may be able to avoid stomach problems by starting with less iron, and then gradually introduced to the dose you need, or taking iron in divided doses throughout day. Some women find they have less trouble with side effects of iron supplements when they take on a release formula, even if the compromise is that iron is not absorbed as easily that way.

If you think your supplement is to make you sick at heart, try to take it at bedtime. If constipation is what you worry, try drinking prune juice. It can help you stay regular (and is a good source of iron itself). Finally, do not worry if your stools look darker when you start taking iron. Is a normal side effect.
