Mind Mental Health CharityIs the issue of mental health driving employers Mad?

The government announced this week that people with mental health problems are to get extra help in managing their condition to help them continue working.

Apparently, the pilot projects run in conjunction with the charity Mental Health Mind have achieved 90% to help people with fluctuating mental health conditions to keep their jobs.

Unfortunately, despite the prevalence of mental health problems in the UK today, there is enormous ignorance about mental illness in general and the effect of mental illness on individuals in particular. This leads to those who suffer from these conditions of being stigmatized. It also leads to sick victims of discrimination, not only in general but also in the workplace.

Stigma and discrimination can extend a patient's condition in that they have become less likely to seek help, which in turn delays treatment and leads to isolation, and therefore is a spiral down from their state so that recovery takes longer. This also prevents people from getting jobs.

A serious mental illness in England, by charity Rethink mental health, the costs of more than 77 billion pounds a year, when the costs of mental health care, loss of income and a life of poor quality are combined. It is a monumental problem that charities such as Rethink and mind trying to fight.

Of particular interest to employers is the fact that the amounts severe mental illness a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.

The Act makes it unlawful to discriminate against people with disabilities and indeed, there is still widespread discrimination against people with disabilities.

The Act defines a person with a disability when he or she has a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term negative effect on its ability to perform normal daily activities day.

The problem with mental retardation is that there is no obvious sign of it. If we consider the effects of a disability, you must consider the person on the basis provided they are not taking a medicine against the state in question.

Employers must be very careful in considering an application for employment of a person who reveals that he or she suffers from a mental condition or has suffered from a mental condition.

To ignore such a request or refuse to employ, without an objective assessment of the situation and that person's ability because it may be discriminatory and would violate the labor law, which will lead to a claim or not the person is used.

Therefore, a prospective employer must interview all suitable candidates for employment, regardless of any condition or disability, they could have been disclosed in the application form. That done, they can reach an objective decision about the relevance of employment. Do not use on a subjective point of view a person who suffers such a mental state is not a suitable person to employment is discriminatory.
