In 2008, federal laws have been amended to recognize same-sex unions in most states of Australia as a de facto partners or domestic partners. These changes were important for gays, lesbians and gender diverse Australians because they promised a more just and more equitable for same-sex couples to end discrimination in all areas of life such as taxes and social security. But still an area of law is uneven, it is the right to marry, it is not currently recognized in Australia. In 2009, the Green Party introduced the bill in the Senate Marriage Equality Amendment, which was strongly supported by the community, but opposed by many influential groups, one in particular, the Catholic Church.
