What is a rehabilitation counselor do?

Rehabilitation counselors assist people with personal, social and vocational disabilities, including substance abuse. They advise people with disabilities as a result of birth defects or illness, accident or stress of everyday life. They evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of individuals, provide personal and professional advice, and arrange for medical care, vocational training and placement. Rehabilitation counselors interview both individuals with disabilities and their families, evaluate school and medical reports, and confer and plan with physicians, psychologists, occupational therapists and employers to determine the capabilities and skills of the individual. Conferring with the client, they develop a rehabilitation program that helps the customer to enjoy the best possible quality of life.

Rehabilitation counselors differ from mental health counselors or psychologists on some key points. The most notable being that the rehabilitation counselors not only provide advice but also test management services, employability, education and species.
